Monitor Adventures

I saw an add on a Linux mailing list I subscribe on Sunday for a refurbished Nokia 21″ monitor (the monitor line is now owned by Viewsonic) for only $300. I managed to talk to the seller down and get it delivered, too. All I can say is wow: this thing is huge. It feels like I’m sitting about a foot away from a small TV. Soon after getting it set-up, I realised that my video card unfortunately does not run at 1600×1200 resolution at 85Hz (the optimal refresh settings on the monitor). And the whole point of getting a new monitor was to run at a larger resolution and maintain a good refresh rate. I’ve always found that anything lower than 85Hz hurts my eyes.

Anyway, after arguing with my video card, I managed to steal a barely used 3DFX Voodoo3 card from a friend and away I went. I’m now running at 1600×1200 at 85Hz at 24-bit colour. Very nice. The other day I had two word processor documents open side-by-side. Nice and clear. Lots of desktop space now.

This is the way it was meant to be.
