SeaMonkey Release

SeaMonkey alpha 1 has been released. Complete with a great anti-phishing detector, apparently. While I understand it’s an alpha, if I were an uneducated user, I would still wonder which is the bigger scam: something called SeaMonkey warning me of a scam, or an e-mail from Barclays that almost looks real.

Dental Floss

Why is it (and I really do think I have a point) that the dental floss your dentist gives you (perhaps forcibly) is the cheapest floss conceivable? It’s hardly waxed. If it’s mint flavoured, it’s flavoured poorly. It shreds during use. It comes in an awkward container straight out of 1950. Is this supposed to make me want to floss? The floss I’ve been buying for a couple years now is still pretty cheap, but it’s been much better than trying to use the crap that my dentist gave me.

Maybe dental offices should give away good quality floss, which might actually encourage use. Or maybe it’s all a scam (more money for the dentists?).

Street-by-street Business Map

Google Maps is great. The local search is even starting to work a little bit better for Canada. It’s so much better than trying to use SuperPages. Have you ever tried to actually look up a business — or worse, a business category — on SuperPages? Good luck.

So, having Google Maps combined with the Local search is a life saver.

But what happens when I know roughly where a store is, what it sells (but not necessarily the category it fits under, just a keyword), and I want to know what it’s called? Or better yet — if it has a web site. Google Maps needs to introduce a feature enabling you to look at a street, and have bubbles pop-up with all the stores along the street. Essentially a way of virtually walking down the street. Once you have that, you can then narrow down your options using keywords.

That would sure make my life easier right now. Instead I guss I’m just going to have to walk down the street. (Note: that’s really not that big of a deal — I can think of much, much worse things than walking down West 4th in Vancouver on a sunny September afternoon.)
