quizmeBC-dot-*not-com*
It was a sad day last Wednesday when I found out that my domain name, quizmeBC.com, had been registered by someone else after my registrar (whom I’ve had good service from in the past) neglected to send a notification that the domain was about to expire.
It is now owned by some stupid company who is exploiting it for free traffic. I’d send people to go see how lame their site is, but I don’t want to give them any additional ad revenue than I already have.
quizmeBC now operates at quizmeBC.ca, quizmeBC.net, and quizmeBC.org.
I’ve contacted both my registrar and the new owners and I’m awaiting a response. I can only hope that the new owners will be understanding given the unfortunate circumstances.
All of this came at a time when my project partner, Tam Sze, and I were discussing ways of generating money to keep the site running. We’ve been busy making a new design and updating and fixing existing code for the quiz engine. As more and more teachers and students are using the site, more load is being placed on my server. The bandwidth used by students for the January exams was rather high, and, unfortunately, we’re not going to last much longer if we keep having to pay out-of-pocket to keep things running.
So our real goal now is to seek out private or public funding to keep the project going to cover not only our operating costs, but also our time. It’s not that we don’t want to do this all for free — but as both of us are students, we don’t have a lot of time. And when we do have time, we’re busy working to pay for school (and rising tuition! eek!).
The point of all this? I’m mad at the stupid people who registered the domain, and my domain registrar. And I’m hoping that some of you random people out there that are reading this will have some suggestions as to where to seek out funding! :-)
